1. Ryan owns a company that creates unique storage containers for liquids. Ryan’s company, “Containers R Us” makes a container that is shaped like a rectangular prism. It has an open top, with no lid. All walls of this containers are 6cm thick. The dimensions of the container are: 38cm wide, 68cm long and 0.34m tall.
a) Find the total volume of Ryan’s container. Show all work necessary to prove your point.
b) Find the capacity of Ryan’s container in mL and litres. Show all work.

2. How many millilitres of water can a cube with a length, width and height of 1m hold? Show all work needed to prove your point.

3. How many litres of water would fit in the cube from question #9. Show all work and briefly explain your method.

4. Ten millilitres is the same as _________________________ millimeters cubed. Show all work.

-Finish the word problem set, if not yet complete:
1.Design a rectangular prism with a volume of 400cm cubed that will effectively package a triangular prism-shaped product that is 4.75cm tall, 4.75cm wide and 15cm long.
2. What is the surface area of your package? Show all work.
3. Create a rectangular prism with a volume of 800 cm cubed. What are the length, width and height?
4. Give the dimensions for 2-6 other rectangular prisms with the same volume.
5. Toblenone is creating a new chocolate bar. It will be shaped like a ANY TYPE of triangular prism and have a total volume as close to 528 cm cubed as possible. What will the dimensions of the bar be?
6. What will the total surface area of the triangular prism be using the dimensions you established? Show all work and calculations.

7. Mr. Mak is designing a garage which is a composite shape made of a triangular prism for the roof, and rectangular prism for his car to be parked. The rectangular prism is 12m wide, 15m tall and 20m long. He wants the triangular prism to overlap all sides of the rectangular prism by 1m.  He also wants the triangular prism to be isosceles and 5m tall. What will the volume of the entire garage be? Show all work.

Surface Area and Volume Vocabulary + Introduction to Volume of Rectangular Prisms

*Use Chapter 8 to help with all questions below
  1. Sketch a rectangular prism. Neatly label a face, vertex and edge.
  2. Explain what a polygon is.
  3. Explain what a regular polygon is.
  4. List all polygons from three sides to ten sides.
  5. Explain what a polyhedron is.
  6. List seven common polyhedrons.
  7. Explain the difference between prisms and pyramids.
  8. Make a quick sketch of the front, top and side view for the box structure at the front of the class.
  9. Choose the corresponding net for each three-dimensional shape. Label the ones that are polyhedrons.
  10. List all regular polyhedra. Beside each one, write the number of faces and the shape of each face.
  11. Write down two formulas that can be used to calculate the VOLUME of a rectangular prism.
